Trauma and Difficult Experiences Counselling in Albany

Some experiences stay with us long after they are over. If something that happened to you still shapes how you feel, sleep, trust or move through the world, that is not weakness or overreaction. It is a sign of how much you have been carrying, and it is something you can be supported with, gently and at your own pace.

Trauma is not defined by how an event would look to someone else. It is about how an experience landed for you, and what your mind and body have been doing to cope ever since. That might trace back to a single, frightening event, or to something quieter that went on for a long time. Either way, counselling offers a steady, unhurried place to understand its effects and slowly loosen their grip.

What living with difficult experiences can look like

The impact of trauma often shows up in ways that seem unconnected to the original experience, which can leave you feeling confused or frustrated with yourself. It might look like:

  • Feeling on edge or easily startled, scanning for danger even in moments that should feel safe, then drained by how much energy that takes.
  • Going numb or checking out, feeling strangely distant from people you care about, or watching your own life as if from behind glass.
  • Reactions that feel bigger than the situation, a certain place, tone of voice or time of year that suddenly pulls you back into how you felt then.

These are not flaws in your character. They are protective responses that once made sense and have simply outstayed their usefulness. You are not broken, and you are not too much.

How counselling with Rene approaches trauma

Rene works in a trauma-informed way, which means safety and pace come first, always. You will never be pushed to relive or recount more than you are ready to, and you set the direction. The aim is not to force you back through the hardest moments, but to help you feel steadier in the present and more in choice about how the past shows up now.

Together you build a sense of ground first, ways to feel more settled and less at the mercy of overwhelm, before looking at anything difficult. From there, at a speed that feels manageable, you can begin to make sense of what happened and gently update the ways your body and mind have learned to protect you. Throughout, you remain the person in charge of what is explored and when.

What to expect

There is no pressure and no fixed number of sessions. The first appointment is simply a conversation about what has been going on and what you would like support with, with no expectation to go into detail before you feel ready. You and Rene decide together what a safe, workable pace looks like, and you can slow down or pause at any point. If it does not feel like the right fit, that is completely okay.

Sessions are available in person in Albany, Western Australia. If travelling to appointments feels like too much, or you are elsewhere in the country, the same steady support is available through secure online counselling across Australia.

Ready when you are

You do not have to carry this on your own, and you do not have to be ready to talk about everything to begin. Book a session with Rene, or ask a question first.
